This was the version of Drive that was going to appear on Hearts Grow Dull. I felt that it had more immediacy and had some melody hooks that stuck with me more than the original. I was listening to a lot of Beach House at the time and can definitely hear that influence creeping in at the corners of the pre-chorus crescendo and the solo. When it came time to try find a place for it in the track listing, I just couldn’t make it fit; it was too jaunty, relative to everything else. When it became clear that I wasn’t happy with the production of the album on a technical level, and that I would have to go back and essentially re-record the whole album, I took the opportunity to write another version that was more suited to the flow of the album.
