A friend of mine, Luke Egyenraam, who would end up being the original guitarist (and then drummer) for Blush Response, showed me Bored Nothing after I sent him the original Without a Sound and (Not In It) For Love demos, saying that I would probably enjoy it if the new direction of my demos was anything to go by. He was right, and I listened to the self-titled Bored Nothing release almost exclusively for a number of months. Fergus’ songwriting captures so much of what I look for in music: disarmingly honest lyrics, concise pop song structure, ear worm worthy hooks, that tendency to toe the line of abrasive noise. We’ve played this cover live several times over the last 2 years and, while it would have been fun to get Joe, Walter and Zach to record this with me, this cover was recorded at the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic, so I recorded it at home with Amy, who is in isolation with me, appearing on bass and backing vocals. It’s a pretty straight-forward cover, to change what Fergus wrote would be to change what I love about the song.
